pool or bong?

February 3, 2009

One of those wrong place, wrong time kind of ordeals?  Months after tearing apart the Beijing waters and winning 8 gold medals, Michael Phelps has decided to take a mental vacation.  A picture was leaked of Phelps smoking a bong.  Personally, I find this to be humorous.  What was probably the sports story of the decade, Michael Phelps had all eyes on him around the world during the summer olympics.  Unfortunately, this has led to him becoming a public icon, and a role model for millions.  That bong hit could prove costly.  Even though Phelps sponsors have continued to back him throughout this incident, he will not be able to erase the photo from fans memories.  The disadvantage that Phelps has is, being an olympic athlete, he only competes in the spotlight once every four years.  In professional sports such as football, and baseball, players save face by reaching and exceeding expectations on the playing field.  The pool is empty until 2012, and it is such a frustrating scenario for the 23 year old.  If I was Phelps I would use this as a chance to support the legalization of marijuana.  (I am just kidding, this would cost him millions in endorsements, and completely erase his credibility.)  It is sad to say, but people now will think of that bong hit, more than the 8 gold medals that Michael Phelps took home this past summer.  Perception and the media sucks sometimes.

Phelps might have made alienated a few people with that pot-smoking picture, but i think he might have gained the support of another huge group of people to take their place
