Dinosaur for Sale?

March 20, 2009

Looks like the state of the economy has brought back an old timer.   I thought dinosaurs were extinct, but a 150 million year old Jurassic specimen is being auctioned off by a Utah lab.   Known as Dryosaurus altus, I am sure the fossil will make great dinner conversation for whoever decides to shack up the dino in their living room.  The value of the specimen is in the $400,000-$500,000 range, according to I.M. Chait Gallery.  Who would be crazy enough to buy a dinosaur fossil for half a mil?  Perhaps celebrities Brad Pitt, Nicolas Cage, or Leonardo DiCaprio.  The three celebrities are all dinosaur fossil collectors.  The day that I can write a $500,000 check for a fossil, I will look in the mirror and slap myself in the face.

The specimen is being sold due to the downfall in the economy. Western Paleontological Laboratories CEO, Cliff Miles realizes that people are more important than dinosaurs, and in order to keep the laboratories afloat, an auction must take place.  If Nicolas Cage ends up buying the fossil, I wonder if he will write it off.
