Day 2 and Day 3 recaps

March 22, 2009

Cinderella came out to dance yesterday as a 13 seed, two 12 seeds, and an 11 seed won their first round games.  The biggest upset of the day was 13 seeded Cleveland State dominating 4 Wake Forest.  I actually had Cleveland State in my bracket because of their ferocious defense, and Wake Forest’s lack of experience.  Cleveland State takes on Arizona tomorrow for a birth in the sweet 16.  The first Big East team to fall was West Virginia.  11 Dayton dismantled the Mountaineers the entire game, not allowing them to get into any kind of tempo.  Dayton plays Kansas tomorrow in round 2.  Somehow, Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan always gets the job done in Wisconsin.  The Badgers took down the athletic and talented Florida State Seminoles, due to Ryan’s defensive approach, and resiliency he demands from his players.  Wisconsin will have a tough matchup with 4 Xavier tomorrow.  The other 12, 5 upset was Arizona taking down 5 Utah.  This wasn’t really an upset, but Arizona won by 13 and proved that they belong in the Big Dance.  They will face Cleveland State for the right to most likely play the #1 overall seed, Louisville in the sweet 16.    Syracuse breezed through Stephen Austin, and will take on Arizona State in what should be a great  matchup tomorrow.  This big 10 champion Ohio State Buckeyes fell victim to clutch shooting by the Siena Saints down the stretch, and ended up losing to the Saints in a 2 OT thriller.  Mich State, and Louisville cruised to their victories as expected, and Kansas took care of business after getting a scare from North Dakota State in the first half.  Missouri crushed the ivy league champs, Cornell.  My favorite game of the day was Oklahoma State beating Tennessee by 2 points.  Cowboys senior point guard Byron Eaton, playing in his first tourney game, finished a three point play with 7.2 seconds left to lift Oklahoma State to the second round where they will face Pittsburgh.  Marquette escaped Utah State by 1 point, Arizona State beat Temple by 9, Pittsburgh played their worst basketball, but ended up beating East Tennessee State by 10.  The Pac 10 champs USC trojans continued their winning ways when they took down Boston College by 7 points.  They play Michigan State in the second round tomorrow.  Michigan State advanced by easily taking care of Robert Morris.

Day 3- Villanova killed UCLA’s run of a third consecutive final four appearance.  This one was over from the start, as Villanova was too quick and athletic for UCLA.  They won by 20.  They now play Duke in the sweet 16.

Memphis beat Maryland by 19 and looked great doing it.  They play the winner of Marquette and Missouri in the sweet 16.

Uconn had their second consecutive blowout victory, as they beat Texas A&M by 26. They look like a final 4 contender to me.  They now face the feisty Purdue Boilermakers in the sweet 16.

Purdue had an impressive hard fought victory against Washington in what was basically a home game for the Huskies.  They now have to deal with Thabeet and co, as they play Uconn in the sweet 16.

Oklahoma’s athleticism wore down Michigan, as the Sooners won by 10.  They play the winner of the Syracuse vs Arizona State game in the sweet 16.

North Carolina let LSU hang around for awhile, but eventually took control and won by 14.  Lawson’s toe seemed to hold up alright, he was limping slightly but I think he will be able to tough it out as the tourney goes on.

Gonzaga won on a last second layup by Demetri Goodson to dash Western Kentucky’s hopes of going to the sweet 16.  The Zags now play UNC in the sweet 16.

Duke will play Villanova in the sweet 16 after earning a hard fought win against Texas.

My picks for tomorrow:

Syracuse -2.5 vs Arizona State-  I expect this to be a great game, but at the end Syracuse wins by 3

Pittsburgh -8.5 vs Oklahoma State- I picked Pittsburgh to go all the way, so I have to expect them to prove a point in this one, they win by 14

Arizona -3 vs Cleveland State-  Arizona cannot make the mistake of looking ahead, Cleveland State has the ability to beat the Wildcats.  However, Budinger, Hill, and Wise will continue their hot shooting, and win by 7

Xavier -4 vs Wisconsin- Wisco’s ride ends here, Xavier wins by 10

Missouri -4 vs Marquette- Missouri has too much for Marquette to handle, and will win by 7

Dayton +7.5 vs Kansas- I like Dayton keeping this game very close.  I actually think they could win.

USC +4 vs Michigan State- I like USC upsetting Michigan State

Louisville -11.5 vs Siena-  Louisville will pull away late to win by 14

Good luck and enjoy Day 4
