Take it already

April 11, 2009

The other night I was out to dinner with a few friends, and I noticed a common trend that reoccurs almost every single time I go out to eat.  Servers always bring some kind of bread before appetizers arrive.  Whether it is a loaf of bread at an italian restaurant, tortilla chips at a mexican joint, or even crispy chips at a chinese restaurant, at one point there will only be one item left. Who is most likely to take the last piece of bread?  I always try being that guy that eats the piece that is second to last.  That way I have no obligation towards that last piece.  More times than not, that last piece will remain uneaten.  Our society is more polite than I originally thought.  Put together all those one pieces of bread left, and you can probably take care of the hunger problem in most third world countries.  Lets take the politeness factor here to the next level, and actually try and make an impact in the world.  Lets start a hunger drive by putting one less piece of bread in every basket at restaurants around the country.  That one piece that would have been left behind anyway can be enjoyed by somebody who desperately needs it.
