The Music Industry Today

April 13, 2009

There has been much talk in the past years about how shitty the record industry has become with the advent of the internet. No one is buying records, artists aren’t being signed, and basically the music industry has gone down the shitter as artists like Soulja Boy and Hurricane Chris have hit the music scene in recent years. I kind of got thrown into the music industry by mistake about 3 years ago when I met Sonny Bamboo. Mike and I now have a music management company that currently manages Sonny, and we have gained a wealth of knowledge about the industry over the past year or two. We have made a lot of connections, and we have learned alot. We thought it would just be easy to get his music heard by the right people, but the reality of today’s music industry has hit us hard. Record executives at most of the major labels are not willing to take risks like they have in the past. Most artists, specifically within the hip-hop genre, have to do it all on their own. The internet is a huge way to build your buzz, and get people to hear your music. We have spent the past few months working as hard as we can on an internet presence for Sonny Bamboo. Whether it is a Facebook profile, a Facebook fan page, Imeem, Twitter, etc., there are endless websites and toos on the internet that can help build the buzz for an artist. One of the best pieces of advice that we received at the beginning, was that we need to have the record companies come to us, not the other way around. If a record executive is interested in signing an artist, and they approach that artist about their interest, then the possible deal that they are going to give is much more in favor of the artist. That is not to say that approaching record companies with music won’t get an artist signed, but you are in a much better position as a management team if you have record labels contacting you about signing your artist. But man is it a grind to build up on artist the independent route. It takes constant communication through the internet with anyone and everyone who is willing to listen. You have to be getting that music out there in every which way possible, and that is where we are sitting today. Sonny just finished up his 3rd mixtape, Staying Alive Volume 3, and it is one of the hottest mixtapes out there right now. No joke. Download it here and find out for yourself. http://www.sendspace.com/file/qmy08y We are working on putting together a demo right now, which we hope to have completed by the end of the summer. And we are still grinding. Updating twitter, myspace, facebook as much as we can. Constantly communicating with people who are listening to music on the internet. That is what it takes in today’s music industry. If you really want to make it, you have to do everything yourself. Check out Sonny’s music at his myspace page at myspace.com/sonnybamboo.
