It starts and stops with King Henrik

April 16, 2009

The New York Rangers are seeking their first Stanley Cup since 1994, and the only chance they have at bringing back the cup to New York is if goaltender Henrik Lundqvist plays like he is possessed.  Down the stretch of the regular season there were times in which I wondered if he is from another planet.  I have never seen a goalie take away the lower half of the net like Henrik does.Like every other professional athlete, Lundqvist goes through his fair share of streaks.  The puck must look like a beach ball to him  Sensational quickness, athleticism, and strong positional play should lead “King Henrik” and the Rangers to the Stanley Cup.  This year it is more wide open than ever, and if it wasn’t for Jose Theodore’s inconsistent play, I would like the Capitals to go all the way.  Defense wins championships, and I am extremely confident in the New York Rangers arsenal of defense.  Michael Rozsival, Wade Redden, Dan Girardi, Marc Staal, and Paul Mara are all solid, and the last line of defense is Lundqvist.  Although the Rangers have been spotty on offense this season, the late season acquisition of Sean Avery has mended the fence a little bit.  He adds ferocioucness, and forces opponenets out of their normal mindsets thanks to Avery’s relentless instigating.  He is like a mosquito that hovers around and keeps nipping at you.

The beauty of the NHL is that a bounce of the puck can make or break a season for any team during the playoffs.  The Rangers have experience and a coach in John Tortorella who already won a Stanley Cup in 2004 while at the helm in Tampa Bay.  Expect to see full grown beards by june for all of the blue shirts.

GO RANGERS!
