Yankee Stadium stumbling out of the gates

April 19, 2009

The New Yankee Stadium is a gorgeous facility, but the Bronx Bombers have been on the wrong end of colossal beatdowns over the past week.  The Cleveland Indians have beaten the Yankees 10-2, and yesterday blew them out 22-4.  That included a 14 run second inning.  The Yankees signed C.C. Sabathia, and AJ Burnett in the offseason, and supposedly Chien Ming Wang was revamped and ready to roll.  Joba Chamberlain was expected to be lights out as a starting pitcher as well.  Sabathia has been inconsistent, Burnett has been worth the money thus far, Wang looks like a minor league pitcher, and Chamberlain should be put back in the bullpen where he belongs.  Nothing seems to go right for the winningest franchise in sports history.  Don’t expect the number of championships to go up anytime soon.  The Yankees bullpen has been disasterous, and their hitting has been nonexistent.  Hopefully these early season blowouts will be a wakeup call, and the Yankees can start playing to justify their payroll.

The stadium itself is a marvel to look at, and I heard the food is not too shabby.  However, the tickets are overpriced, and it is unfair for passionate Yankee fans who are unable to afford a seat.  I thought sporting events were all about entertaining the public, and helping people cope with tough times.  Sadly sports are all about money at the professional level, and Yankee Stadium is a perfect symbol of the turmoil our society will continue to face over the upcoming months and years.
