Lakers in cruise control

April 22, 2009

The Lakers are up 2 games to 0 on the Utah Jazz in the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs.  However, tonight, Kobe and Co. let a fifteen point lead dwindle to five at one point, until finally sealing the deal with a Trevor Ariza three pointer.  The Jazz played their hearts out tonight, and even Deron Williams 35 points wasn’t enough to muster out a win at the Staples center.  With injured center, Mehmet Okur sitting out again, the Jazz don’t have the size down low to matchup with Bynum, Gasol, and Odom.  The emergence of Shannon Brown definitely doesn’t help matters for the Jazz.  Carlos Boozer looked sloppy most of the night, and it looks like Jerry Sloan is on the verge of another season without an NBA championship.  The Jazz are much better than the eighth seed, but due to Carlos Boozer missing forty four games with a knee injury, they have been put in the unfortunate situation of playing the best team in the NBA.  The Lakers will most likely win the championship this year thanks to their uncanny ability to turn on the switch at any given time.  They coasted to victory tonight playing their B- game, and Phil Jackson was not happy with the lackluster defensive effort.  However, the Lakers offense is too good for any defense that they will stumble across in the playoffs.  I expect the Lakers to take down the Jazz in five games.
