Houston Rockets on verge of breakthrough

April 28, 2009

The Houston Rockets have a commanding 3 games to 1 lead on the Portland Trailblazers.  Tonight, the Rockets will try and seal the deal at Portland.  During the 1990s, Rockets fans were rewarded with back to back NBA championship titles.  Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Vernon Maxwell are long gone, and surprisingly, Tracy McGrady is injured.  With McGrady on the court, Houston has made the playoffs in five of the last six season.  However, those five playoff appearances led to five first round losses.  Tracy McGrady has never won a playoff series throughout his career, and you have to wonder what is going through his head right now?  Yao Ming has been a force that Portland has been unable to deal with in the paint, and Ron Artest has given Brandon Roy fits at times.  McGrady is obviously a great player, and I don’t doubt that the Rockets would win this series with him.  On the flip side of this, it seems as though the Rockets execute with much more efficiency while McGrady is sidelined.  When there is a star on the court teammates feel obliged to find that player on a consistent basis.  Many times it would be better off for the other players to create the plays themselves, or find another player to pass the ball to.  I am not hating on T-Mac, the guy is a top 10 talent in this league, and gives it his all whenever he is on the court.  He is definitely cheering on his teammates at the Rose Garden tonight as the Rockets try to end the dry spell.
