Chuck Daly will be missed

May 9, 2009

One of the best coaches in NBA history, Chuck Daly passed away at the age of 78 earlier today.  He led the Detroit Pistons to back to back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990.  More than anything, Daly had the ability to manage egos in and out of the locker room.  Joe Dumars, Isiah Thomas, Dennis Rodman, and Bill Laimbeer, just to name a few.  Daly also led the Dream Team to the gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona olympic games.  The “bad boys” evolved from Daly’s tormenting defense.  The relentless in your face and bruising style that Daly taught his players helped them eliminate MJ from taking over games in the late 1980s, and it also prevented the high flying Celtics from racking up points. When Bird and the Celtics faced the Pistons in the 1987-1988 season during the first round of the playoffs, they only put up 100 points on one occasion during the series.  The Celtics had averaged 114 points a game during the regular season, but Daly was too good of a game planner.

Chuck Daly was a great coach, and a great human being and will be missed by NBA nation, as well as his family, friends, and all his loyal fans.
