Dirk Nowitzki shows why he is one of the best

May 12, 2009

Dirk Nowitzki displayed to the world why he is one of the best players in the NBA last night.  His 44 point 13 rebound performance was impressive, the 19 in the fourth quarter was even more impressive, but being down 3 games to 0 and putting up this kind of effort is monumental.  Nowitzki led the Mavericks to a come from behind 119-117 win in Dallas. The hardest thing for an athlete to do is compete at the highest level when their team is near the end.  Everybody has counted the Mavericks out of this series, and that might have included some of Nowitzki’s teammates heading into last night’s game.  The referees made a huge mistake in not calling a call on Antoine Wright in the waning seconds of game 3.  Carmelo Anthony went on to drain a 3 to send the Nuggets to a dominant 3-0 lead on the screwed over Dallas team.  I don’t know what was worse, Mark Cuban telling Kenyon Martin’s mom that her son is a punk, or the refereeing throughout the entire fourth quarter of that game.  All put aside, I would love to have Dirk Nowitzki on my team.  He gets a lot of heat for not winning an NBA championship 3 years ago, when D-Wade took over the series and led the Heat to an astonishing 4 wins in a row to win the title.   In the past Dirk has been criticized for not showing enough leader like qualities.  Being passive off the court, and not being assertive enough on it.  All these negative qualities no longer exist in Dirk, as tonight was a portrait of him being a top 10 player in the league.  There aren’t many seven footers in history who can take the ball to the rack with ease, and then step back and hit a 3.  Give the German a lot of credit because it is very difficult to come from Europe and be successful in the NBA.  There have been a few decent players that pop up here and there from overseas, but I believe that Nowitzki is the pillar of success for all Europeans.
