Sister Act repeated: Serena vs Venus

July 4, 2009

For the second year in a row, Serena Williams and Venus Williams will play each other in the Wimbledon finals.  This will be the 21st time that the sisters meet.  So far they hold a 10-10 record, so this one will be for bragging rights.  Venus won Wimbledon last year against Serena in straight sets, so younger sis definitely is hungry for revenge.  The awkwardness of playing a sibling, must have been alleviated after the second or third time they faced off.  This has become routine, and quite frankly, it is because they are too good for competition.  When Serena and Venus are playing their “A” game, they are impossible to beat.  Lets look at the semifinals a couple days ago as an example.  Serena was playing some of her worst tennis throughout the match against Elena Dementieva. The champion spirit inside of Serena allowed her to oust Dementieva in a five set classic.  After watching that match, I walked around feeling perplexed for a few minutes.  Elena Dementieva is a top tier pro, and Serena somehow managed to beat her despite what seemed like a million unforced errors.  On the flip side, Venus Williams cruised to victory over #1 seed Dinara Safina.  I have never seen such a beat down in my life.  Good thing I didn’t get up for a bathroom break during that one, because Venus won 6-0, 6-1, while only having one unforced error.  Safina was ranked as the best woman tennis player in the world heading into Wimbledon.  I thought I was witnessing a coach teaching her student out there.

So who is going to win the 21st matchup between the sisters?  I have to give the edge to Venus, as she has played almost flawless tennis throughout the entire tournament.  Venus also is the more fit of the two, but I don’t see fatigue playing a major role in the outcome of this battle.  I am expecting Serena to keep the match close, but when all is said and done, the older sister will be on top yet again, and win Wimbledon for a sixth time!
