potential is a scary word

May 27, 2011

I have been hearing the word potential lately being tossed around like a hot potato.  Potential used to be something that I correlated to.  Having the chance at something always seemed acceptable enough, even if it was a slim to none shot.  If there was a small window, any type of opportunity at all for me to succeed in some way, I would grasp that moment in time and try to make the best of it.  Last night I went to NYC and met up with five of my childhood friends, all of whom I have known for twenty years.  Growing up in a really small town had its ups and downs, but being able to develop and hold onto close relationships is a major positive.  We all remain very close and speak regularly.   Every one of those guys had a ton of potential growing up, and for the most part they have lived up to it within their careers.  A venture capitalist, an engineer, a teacher, an entrepreneur, we’ve got a little bit of everything in the mix.  After a great night of conversation, dinner, and some drinks, potential was consuming my thoughts.  I was speaking with my buddy Nick on the phone earlier and he broke down potential as “acknowledging the chance of failure”.  That should be the webster’s dictionary definition for potential.  What does it mean if you have what it takes but you don’t make it happen?  If you have potential and it leads to success, then you can just coin yourself as successful.  No more of this potential nonsense…make it happen!
