The Luxury of Boredom

July 11, 2013

I got a call the other day from a buddy and right off the bat he blurted out the words “I’m so bored man there’s nothing to do”.  At first this annoyed the hell out of me.  There is always something to do.  Pick up a book, go get a workout in,check out a matinee, a museum in town, bowl some pins, grab some sushi and hot sake, hell just walk around and listen to music for awhile.  Then after contemplating further, I realized that boredom is a new phenomenon!  Throughout the history of mankind the luxury of boredom didn’t exist.  If anything boredom was the idea of a heaven back during the early civilization days.  Constant plagues and wars wiped out any hope of even the inkling of having nothing to do.  Many people were worried about where the next meal was going to come from, and/or how long until they had to crawl into the bomb shelter while worrying about a nuclear bombing killing their entire family.  Whether it was starvation, famine, or constant violence, up until very recently boredom hasn’t existed.  Once the draft lottery came to a halt in 1973, and the Cold War officially ended in 1991, and the Gulf War ended in 1995, Generation Z (those born between 1995-2012) came into this world with a bright world ahead of them.

Terrorism became the new destructive force to consume the thoughts of many after the Oklahoma City bombings, and 9/11, but we bounced back pretty well as a nation, like we always seem to do.   There will always be a few disasters in every generation, and a couple bad apples among them. However, living in the United States of America affords the younger generations the ability to pave their own way.  A new era is upon us, and it is essential to cherish, optimize, and utilize this free time.  Passion is everything in life.  Have no fear and pursue whatever you yearn for in your day to day thoughts.  If you have the luxury of time you are committing a travesty by wasting it by sitting around and saying “I’m bored”.  There is more going on today than there is was yesterday, and tomorrow will bring even more advancements and entertainment.  You love the UFC and want to take mixed martial arts classes to try to get a black belt in Muay Thai? I personally don’t have the correct shin structure for that, but if that is in your deck of cards, play it!  Are you an ambitious writer and want to get published one day?  Take out that pen and paper or laptop, whatever floats your boat, and just start to write.  Way too much untapped talent is hovering around all of us on the day to day.  The only one that can truly explore that energy is yourself.   Don’t allow boredom to creep into your thoughts. Its up to us to build the foundation for future generations to have the luxury of “boredom” as well.    I’ll leave you with this, from one of the greats….

“necessity is what impels men to take action, and once the necessity is gone, only rot and decay are left”

– Niccolo Machiavelli
